DTF Adhesive Powder: Grades, Usage and Storage
The layer that does the bonding.
After printing, powder is applied to the wet ink and shaken off everywhere else. It sticks only where there is ink. Curing then melts it into a continuous adhesive film bonded to the back of the print.
Because the adhesive is doing all the bonding, a powder problem never looks like a powder problem. It looks like a print that lifted at the edges after five washes — which most people blame on pressing.
Fine or medium.
Grade is particle size, and it trades detail against bond strength. Neither is better in general; they suit different work.

Most shops run fine as the default and keep medium for heavy garments. If you only buy one, buy fine — it handles the majority of apparel work and detail loss is harder to recover from than a marginally weaker bond.
Black powder, and when it earns its place.
Adhesive powder is normally white. On a dark garment, any powder that keys slightly beyond the edge of the ink can leave a faint pale halo around the design — the same visual problem as a halo left by a background remover, but caused at the powder stage instead.
Black powder solves it by disappearing against dark fabric. On light garments the logic reverses and white is correct, so this is a second bag rather than a replacement.

You use less than you think.
Powder consumption confuses people because most of what you apply is not consumed. You pour it over the sheet, it sticks to the wet ink, and everything else is shaken off and recovered. Only the part that adhered leaves the system.
That means your real consumption tracks printed area, not sheet count. A full-coverage photographic print consumes many times what a sheet of small logos does, even though both are one sheet.
Reusing recovered powder
Recovering and reusing the excess is standard practice, not a corner being cut. The one rule: sieve it before it goes back into circulation. Lint, fibres and stray hairs picked up from the shop end up cured into a print otherwise, and that defect is not removable.
Buying quantity
Powder keeps well sealed, so it is reasonable to buy deeper than you would buy white ink. The constraint is storage rather than shelf life — a large sack in a humid space will spoil long before it would have expired.
Humidity is the whole problem.
Adhesive powder is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture out of the air. Damp powder clumps, applies unevenly and cures inconsistently, which produces exactly the failure you least want: a transfer that looks fine and lifts later.

What good powder looks like on a finished sheet.
Whether you are producing transfers or buying them, the same check applies: tilt the sheet under a light and look across the back of the printed area.
• Even coverage across the whole design, reaching the edges.
• Nothing shedding loose from the sheet when handled.
• No bare spots in the printed area.
• A smooth surface, not gritty, on what should be a smooth print.
• No visible halo of powder beyond the ink edge.

- It is what bonds the print to the fabric. Powder is applied to the wet ink and cured into a continuous adhesive layer — the ink itself never touches the garment. That makes powder quality a direct input to how long a print lasts.

Powder is the cheapest thing in the workflow and the easiest to ruin by storing it badly. Those two habits cover almost everything.
